Click the Scheme pop-up menu, then choose GUID Partition Map. In the sidebar, select the storage device you want to erase, then click the Erase button. I also tried it in a different command on the other page you referenced: typing “$ sudo diskutil unmount force /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD” resulted in “Volume Macintosh HD on disk0s2 failed to unmount. If you want to erase any other type of storage device: Double-click Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities folder. I tried the command “$ sudo lsof | grep /Volume/Macintosh\ HD” but it resulted in nothing, I just got a reset terminal after it prompted me for my password. Thank you for the additional assistance but I’m not quite sure what to do with any of this. The script runs just fine, but when the backup is completed, I drag the desktop image of the FireWire drive to the trash to unmount it and get a finder alert saying 'The operation could not be completed because the disk 'backup disk' is in use. dev/disk0s2 297Gi 9.1Gi 288Gi 4% 2455523 75477379 3% /ĭevfs 181Ki 181Ki 0Bi 100% 626 0 100% /dev Ive been using a Unix script to back up my internal PowerBook drive to an external FireWire drive. Map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)įilesystem Size Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on Map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse) dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled) Is there a way to force the unmount other than using terminal - I really dont like using terminal always nervous that I make a mistake typing. Tried it several times using disk utility. When I try to erase to reformat, disk utility tells me that the disk will not unmount. Have you ever tried to format a disk in Mac OS X and Disk Utility wont Unmount the Hard Drive for formatting It can happen for external (USB and Firewire). Typing “mount” and hitting Enter yielded: Its Mac formatted now but its going to a friend who doesnt use a Mac. Typing “/Volumes/” and hitting Tab once yielded “Macintosh HD” Tab a second time did nothing.Ģ.
